Tis the season for holiday baking! It’s time to break out the recipe box to begin baking your favorite festive cakes, cheerful pies and joyful cookies. No matter what your baking plans are this year, did you know you can use sorghum flour in your recipes?
Sorghum is a naturally gluten-free whole grain that can be milled into flour, which is great for family and friends who have celiac disease or a gluten intolerance. Sorghum flour has a light color and neutral flavor and can be used with other flours in a variety of baking methods. Since sorghum is gluten-free, it is important to remember a binder, such as xanthan gum or cornstarch, is needed to add stretch to the flour. You can make your own gluten-free all-purpose flour blend or you can purchase a gluten-free all-purpose flour blend from companies like Nu Life Market, Wondergrain and Bob’s Red Mill. All-purpose sorghum flour can be substituted cup for cup with regular wheat flour in a variety of baked goods.
Are you ready to make your own all-purpose sorghum flour blend for all your jolly good holiday treats? Let’s get started.
Here’s what you’ll need:
1/3 cup sorghum flour
2/3 cup garfava bean flour
1 cup cornstarch
1 cup tapioca starch/flour
Simply whisk together all of the ingredients and store tightly covered, in a dark, dry place.
