The holidays are here, and that means it’s time to celebrate! With the holiday season comes a variety of holiday parties filled with fun, food and jolly activities. Whether you are a seasoned-party pro or it is your first time hosting, we have gathered five tips to help inspire a festive holiday party.
A theme can add a new layer of fun! Have a favorite Christmas movie, book or song? Let it inspire your whole party! Once you have picked your theme, find or make decorations that will make the theme come to life. Plan on playing music during the party? Put together a party playlist inspired by your theme. If your theme is inspired by a movie, let the movie play in the background and/or have a holiday watch party.
Good food is an essential part of any holiday party! Whether you plan to serve a full-course meal or hors d’oeuvres, there are many different options. Preparing a menu in advance can help you create the perfect festive feast and save time. Be sure to select a variety of recipes that tie into your Christmas theme. For recipe inspiration, pull out your recipe box and choose some of your family favorites, or for new, creative ideas, browse Pinterest or read popular blogs. For the perfect holiday spread, choose a blend of healthy alternatives, such as this Pomegranate, Walnut and Sorghum Salad, to accompany traditional favorites like this Holiday Bundt Cake (link to new recipe). Drinks are also a fun holiday party addition. Mix up a batch of festive punch or for an adult-beverage option, serve this Twisted Sorghum Cider. Alternatively, if you want to mix things up this year, host a potluck and ask guests to bring their favorite Christmas dish!
When sending out invitations to your party, share your theme and invite them to dress up. If your theme is based on a movie, have guests dress up as their favorite character. If your theme is inspired by a song, have guests dress up in something that depicts the lyrics. Whether it is a fancy, fun or goofy occasion, your guests will enjoy the holiday spirit. You can even have a costume contest and let guests vote on their favorite costume. For a simpler option, have guests wear their favorite Christmas sweater or shirt - tacky sweaters never go out of style!
Games add excitement to any party! For your holiday party, search for fun, festive options that get everyone involved, such as the saran wrap ball game! Do your guests enjoy singing? Have a Christmas-inspired karaoke contest. Test your guests’ knowledge with a game of holiday trivia,or keep it traditional and pull out your favorite board and card games.
Holiday gift exchanges are always a fun way to engage guests. For a traditional option, host a white elephant or ornament exchange. For something a little different, exchange gift cards, wine or even books. Or think out-of-the box and come up with your very own exchange based on your theme.
